A spiritual seeker was once initiated into the Vishnu mantra by a Vaishnav guru. Filled with devotion, he embraced the Vaishnav path wholeheartedly. In the early stages of his sadhana (spiritual practice), he found great joy in nam japa (repetition of the Lord’s name) and diligently followed his spiritual routine twice a day. His heart overflowed with faith, and he felt he was on the path to spiritual fulfillment.
However, after a few years, the seeker began to feel stagnant. There were no divine sounds, no visions of his deity. He felt no evidence of spiritual progress, no signs of the divine presence that he so earnestly sought. As doubt slowly crept in, he began to question the efficacy of his practice. Is this mantra working? he wondered. One day, convinced that his efforts were bearing no fruit, he began to seek another guru.
Through various means, he heard of a Tantrik adept in Vamamarga sadhana, known for his accomplishments in rituals and mystic practices. The seeker, desperate for tangible results, was drawn to this new teacher. The Tantrik guru, seeing his eagerness, gave him a mantra connected to a lower-realm deity and instructed him to recite it for 30 days at a cremation ground. On the 30th day, the deity would appear and grant him any boon he desired.
The seeker, full of hope, performed the sadhana exactly as instructed. On the 30th day, he finally heard a voice:
“I am pleased with your devotion and sadhana. Ask for any boon, and I shall grant it.”
The seeker, however, was not interested in material gains. He humbly replied, “Lord, before asking for any boon, I wish to see your divine form. Grant me your darshan.”
The deity hesitated and then said, “I cannot grant you darshan. The Vishnu mantra you practiced earlier has filled your aura with Lord Vishnu’s pure vibrations. I am a being from a lower realm and cannot appear before such divine energy. Now, ask for your boon, for I cannot show myself to you.”
The seeker was shaken. In that moment, he realized the immense power of the Vishnu mantra that he had so carelessly abandoned. Overcome with guilt, he bowed to the deity and said, “I seek no boon. I am grateful that you have revealed the truth to me. Please return to your realm.”
That night, the seeker returned home, humbled by the revelation. The next day, with a heart full of repentance, he went to his original guru and confessed his doubts and actions. The compassionate guru, with a knowing smile, consoled him and said, “You may not realize how far you have come on your spiritual journey, but both your Guru and your deity know. The deity reveals himself at the right time. Patience and perseverance are part of the path; they test your faith.”
This story reflects the journey of many spiritual seekers. In our search for spiritual progress, we often become disheartened when we do not see immediate results. We begin to doubt our practice, question our gurus, and, in desperation, look for shortcuts or start Guru Shopping. But the true spiritual path requires patience, faith, and consistency. The divine works in mysterious ways, and progress often happens beneath the surface, beyond the reach of our expectations.
A true seeker practices without expectation, and continues on the path regardless of the visible signs. The Lord, who resides in the heart of every seeker, knows the perfect time for divine revelation. Spiritual progress is not always measured by visions, sounds, or mystical experiences, but by the subtle transformation of the heart and mind.
The lesson here is clear: trust your path, trust your practice, and trust your Guru. Just as the sun rises after the longest night, divine grace will manifest when the time is right. Until then, patience, perseverance, and faith are the keys to spiritual progress.
